September 2007
Projects and Exhibitions update from Cynthia Lawson
EXHIBITION: Momentum, Madarts Fall Show Part I
On view from 09/29 - 10/14
Madarts: 255 18th St (b/w 5th & 6th Aves.), Brooklyn, NY
Gallery hours: Weekends, 12-6pm or Thursdays 6-9pm
I will be showing new work from my continuing "Time/Space Series" - photographs created to capture time and space in a series of still images. Sequences of images that can be collaged digitally to create one print are presented as physically collaged, almost sculptural, backlit objects. The actual thickness of the "photograph" represents the variances of time captured. The amount of variation from one layer to the next can either represent the chaos experienced in those few seconds or a legible narrative in those spaces where the movement was almost non existent, yet present.
EXHIBITION: Net Art Colombia: Es Feo y No Le Gusta el Cursor
Online through March 5, 2008 - www.artenlared.org
For this exhibition I created "Tricolor v.2007" - "Tricolor" describes, in Spanish, something with three colors. In this case, the Colombian flag (yellow, blue and red) is constantly reconfigured, not in its colors but in its content. This project critiques the at-times inherent, but at-times unknown, meaning in a country's symbols, such as its flag. The flag is "updated" with live news feeds about Colombia from a variety of news sources. It therefore states the position of defining a country's most untouchable symbol, not through our relationship with it, but through how others (ie. the media) see, and report on it.
The project's title refers to the colloquial name with which Colombians refer to its flag, as well as the technological abbreviation of software versions. In reality, this "2007 Version" will continue to update itself, as long as the Flash coding that drives it is current with web technologies.
