Faculty Attendance

Teaching Schedule
All degree program courses are scheduled on weekdays between 8:30am and 10:30pm, in accordance with curricular needs of the academic program and availability of facilities. Semester long degree courses meet a minimum of 15 sessions; in cases where a class cannot be held due to a school holiday, make-up classes must be scheduled and announced well in advance.

The instructor is responsible for meeting classes regularly and promptly in accordance with the established schedule. Lateness, inadequate time in class and early departure are not consistent with the teaching standards of the School.

Instructors can check their teaching schedule online via ALVIN.

Lateness
Instructors are responsible for arriving at the classroom on time. Should an instructor be significantly delayed, they must notify their department. Students should be instructed that if an instructor does not appear at the appointed hour, a representative from the class should check with the Department before assuming that the class is canceled.

Absences
When, because of professional obligations outside the School, it is not possible for an instructor to meet a scheduled class, the instructor must inform the Department Chair of the forthcoming absence at least one week in advance. Only an emergency or sudden illness permits shorter notice. Absences for personal (including business) reasons are not permitted as paid leave.

Sick Days
Instructors should notify Department Chairs as soon as possible when absence due to illness occurs or is anticipated so that arrangements can be made for substitute teachers if appropriate.

Part-time faculty are entitled to one paid sick day per course, per semester. Absence thereafter will be subject to salary deduction.

To be eligible, a faculty member must have taught previously for four semesters at Parsons. These arrangements do not apply to the Pre-enrollment Programs Teaching Staff or to Continuing Education Teaching Staff.

Substitutes
When an absence is anticipated, the Department Chair and faculty member discuss the nature of the class to be held and jointly determine whether it is advisable to hire a substitute or to cancel the class. As per the union contract, substitute teaching pay is based on 100% of teaching rate times number of hours taught. The same number of hours will be deducted from the absent faculty member's paycheck (unless the absence is the faculty member's first sick day.) The faculty member's check will be adjusted accordingly. When a faculty member is unable to meet scheduled classes due to illness, the appropriate Sick Leave provisions apply (see sick days).

A Request for Independent Services form must be obtained from the departmental office, completed and signed by the instructor. The lecturer/substitute should be informed that payment will take up to three weeks from the date the request is received by the Dean's Office. If substitutes are already Parsons/New School employees, the payment will be added to the regular monthly paycheck after the necessary forms have been submitted.

Course Cancellations
The School reserves the right to cancel courses in the event that enrollment is insufficient or for institutional, educational, or space and scheduling reasons.
